Ordering info and Prices

Ordering process:

Normally for ordering the best thing to do is to contact me first (see the contact page) so we can discuss the project.  Please do not hesitate to approach me with any questions, as producing the best portrait for you is my highest priority.  The most popular sizes/prices/mediums for the portraits I do are listed in the prices section below.  If would prefer to simply order and entrust me with completing your portrait, then follow these instructions:

  • Select a photo that you love (or take a photo - see photography tips below)
  • Decide on the medium/size you wish your portrait to be produced in (see choosing size and medium section below)
  • PayPal buttons are available (in the Prices, Payments section below) to pay for the option you choose
  • Email me the photo/photos you wish to use (see contact page) and I will reply asap to confirm when the work will be completed for approval

For professionals, or those who wish a personal service, I can also take photos of the subject in a personal sitting.  These are then used to create your final portrait.  This would have to be negotiated dependent on location, and travel expenses would need to be included.  This service can also be extended to painting/drawing from life (in sittings) but again this is subject to extra costs.

Prices, Payments:

Below is the pricing and payment chart for the most popular commission work sizes and mediums.  I would normally advise contacting me first before ordering so we can discuss the project, but if you would prefer to simply order asap then the PayPal buttons are available below.  If you cannot see a size you require, or have any other special requirements, don't hesitate to ask, I am always ready to help produce your perfect portrait.

Framing:

Unless you wish to have your picture framed locally, I would recommend requesting a framed option for any portraits.  This means that I can deal with framing the picture safely, and it is extra protection, particularly for more delicate pastel and pencil portraits.  I do not currently hold frames in stock, but have a large range available from my suppliers, to suit all tastes and budgets.  I will advise on this in our initial discussion, or on completion as appropriate.  I am happy to source any frame you feel matches the picture and your home decor/other picture frames.  Below is an example of a framed completed portrait:

Photography tips:

If you have a perfect photo, that you would love to have painted as a portrait, then this is ideal.  Often however, clients will have a number of photos of the person/animal or event they wish to be painted (ie: wedding photos, or photos of family/pets)  If this is the case, on beginning a commission I will request that you email me the photos, so we can decide together which will make the best portrait.  Should you only have prints of photos, you are welcome to mail them to me, but it is quicker and easier to scan them and email if possible.

If taking photos specifically for a portrait, then a few things that might help are:

  • Lighting:  Natural light is best, and for people think about positioning the subject in a way so there is some natural shadow to show the structure of the face.
  • Position:  Take shots from different angles, main ones are facing the camera, 3/4 view, and profile.  Think about how the subject should be sitting, and how they should be dressed.
  • Face:  Try to focus on the face and have that fill the majority of the shot (unless it is for a group or full body painting)

Choosing size and medium:

Below is a little information on the most popular sizes/mediums I offer for portraits.  I can work in almost any practical size/medium, so if you have any special requests, please feel free to contact me and discuss them.  I produce all my portraits to the highest standard, so choice of medium and size is really down to personal preference, and number of subjects.  Standard prices are for a single subject, see pricing for cost of additional subjects :

SIZE (in inches) MEDIUM AVAILABLE RECOMMENDATION (see pricing for cost of extra subjects)

12x8" A4 size Pencil/Charcoal, Pastel, Oil 1-2 people/animals

24x16" A2 size Pencil/Charcoal, Pastel, Oil larger scales suitable for any subject/s

Pencil/Charcoal

This is a monochrome portrait (black and white) created using either pencil (graphite) or charcoal and white pastel on paper.  This service is the least expensive, but can be one of the most beautiful and striking.  It is perfect for gifts, or for emotional portraits.

Pastel

Pastel is a quicker and slightly more economic way to get a very professional finished colour portrait.  Pastel is applied on paper in a painterly style, and the finished result is more akin to a painting than a drawing.  Perfect for anything from gifts to professional portraits.

Oil on canvas

Oil on canvas is the most prestigious of the choices offered here.  More expensive due to the time and effort involved, this is often the choice for commemorative work and corporate portraits.

It is also the perfect medium for grand larger scale works.
